Botox originally served as a medical treatment for muscular conditions. The botulinum toxin — from which it gets its name — is a neurotoxin that disrupts the way the nervous system operates. While that may sound rather serious, the amount of toxin in a typical Botox injection is so small that there is no widespread problems stemming from its use. In fact, it’s a common cosmetic treatment, with well over 6 million injections annually.
The injection works on the muscles that cause active wrinkles. Think about frown lines and how they set in without conscious thought. Sure, they can be relaxed if a person thinks about relaxing, but the moment concentration or stress set in, the frown lines are back. After a Botox treatment, though, those muscles are paralyzed temporarily. Effects of Botox appear within a couple days and last between 3-6 months before another injection is needed.
Dermal fillers are another injectable cosmetic treatment. Where Botox works by relaxing muscles that cause wrinkles, fillers help with passive wrinkles, or wrinkle-prone areas that have no muscle influence. A dermal filler simply adds volume to support or enhance outer layers of skin. Essential Aesthetics and Laser uses the Juvéderm® line of gel fillers.
There are several products that support various needs, and each dermal filler uses hyaluronic acid, a substance already present in the body. While fillers augment what natural collagen does in the body, it turns out that hyaluronic acid lasts longer as a filler than collagen does.
Juvéderm has 3 formulations. To build volume in the cheeks, Essential Aesthetics and Laser uses Voluma® XC, as it returns a natural shape to the cheeks and fills out minor lines. Vollure™ XC is the line filler gel, treating moderate-to-severe wrinkles and folds. Finally, Volbella® targets the lips, not only filling vertical lip lines, but adding volume to the lips themselves.
