SculpSure Body Contouring Q & A

Essential Aesthetics and Laser

What’s body contouring?

Body contouring refers to any procedure that changes the shape or profile of the patient’s body. Most commonly, it refers to interventions involving body fat (called adipose tissue) or the cutting and reshaping of skin, such as facelifts and tummy tucks.

Traditionally, body fat modifications involve liposuction procedures. These surgical interventions are invasive and carry the risk of surgical complications. Essential Aesthetics and Laser uses the SculpSure system to offer a non-invasive, non-surgical alternative to patients who have no practical alternatives for treatment. Patients in good shape, at or near their ideal body weight, and still retain pockets of fat on the belly or flanks have little recourse when it comes to fat stores. Further diet and exercise won’t give the spot results they desire, and surgical contouring is excessive for their needs. This is where SculpSure excels.

How does SculpSure work?

The SculpSure lasers use a specific frequency of light that adipose tissue absorbs easily, but doesn’t affect surrounding skin, muscle, or bone. As the fat layers absorb the laser light, these warm, up to about 10 degrees above body temperature. This changes the tissue enough that the body senses damage and begins the process of clearing out the disrupted tissue through the lymphatic system. These stores of fat are unlikely to return unless the patient gains approximately 30% of their current body weight. Patients usually see results at around 6 weeks, with maximum results achieved at around 12 weeks.

Are there risks associated with SculpSure body contouring?

If a patient has any reaction to the SculpSure treatment, they usually experience slight redness and swelling, much like a mild sunburn. This is from minor laser absorption in tissue surrounding the treatment area. SculpSure uses a single, very narrow bandwidth of light, and contains no ultraviolet light — the component of sunlight that causes severe burns. Any redness typically disappears after a few hours or a couple days in extreme cases. Otherwise, there is little risk of complications. Most patients return to daily activities immediately after a 25-minute treatment.
